Bread ambassador

Co-star of Channel 4’s The Fabulous Baker Brothers series Tom Herbert will head up a new campaign to encourage kids to bake their own bread. Herbert has been made an ambassador for the Real Bread Campaign’s Bake Your Lawn scheme, aimed at encouraging schools and their pupils to grow their own small plot of organic wheat.

Bertinet in Bath

Following the success of its pop-up shop, The Bertinet Bakery has opened a permanent shop in Bath. It will sell a wide range of breads, tarts, cakes and pastries. Baker Richard Bertinet has also announced he will be bringing out a new book, Pastry, in May 2012.

By the slice

The owner of Kristy’s Bakery in Sketty, Swansea has decided to sell his bread by the slice to help those customers who don’t need a whole loaf. According to the South Wales Evening Post, Antonio Carra said customers had been asking to buy bread by weight, rather than entire loaves. So he is now selling slices of his sourdough bread for 35p per 100 grams.

Ingredient blip

In the ’Fit for a queen’ artisan bread masterclass in British Baker’s 13 January issue (pages 16-17), the fresh yeast measurement for the dough mixture should be 0.165kg, not 1.650kg. The baker’s1.3% yeast weight is correct.
