Things may have been disappointing on the rugby pitch for England, but at least the home nation’s Dallaglio Steak & Ale Pie triumphed at the inaugural Pie World Cup.
Hosted by London-based pie manufacturer Square Pie, the competition pitched pies inspired by all nations taking part in the Rugby World Cup against one another in a series of head-to-head match days.
In the end, it all came down to a tussle between England’s Steak & Ale and New Zealand’s Mince and Cheese pies. While New Zealand took down Australia on the field, England beat New Zealand in the restaurant to take the crown on Saturday.
Martin Dewey, founder of Square Pie, said: “We’re so pleased at the response to our first ever rugby Pie World Cup! We saw rugby and pie supporters from far and wide excited to explore our exotic pie line-up.
“Taking England out of the equation for risk of bias, my personal favourite was the Samoan Mango and Chicken, but it was great to see England take the champion title after the results in the Rugby World Cup. It’s just a shame the results in our restaurants weren’t reflected on the rugby pitch this year.”
The Dallaglio Steak & Ale Pie had the added benefit that, for every pie sold, 10p was donated to the Dallaglio Foundation. Founded by former England international rugby player Lawrence Dallaglio, the foundation aims to help disengaged youngsters become more employable through workplace experiences and the discipline of rugby.
