Former cricketer Phil Tufnell will be supporting this year’s National Doughnut Week, which takes place between 11 and 18 May.

Star and team captain on BBC One’s A Question of Sport, Tufnell is also vice-president of The Children’s Trust, the official charity for the Week, which supports children with multiple disabilities, in particular those with acquired brain injuries.

He said: “I do hope that bakers, food retailers, coffee shops and the public will get behind this year’s fundraising event and help to raise as much money as possible for a very special charity.”

As part of this year’s activity, organisers behind National Doughnut Week conducted an online survey to discover the doughnut-eating habits of consumers.

It revealed that 40% of people said trying to eat a doughnut without licking your lips was all part of the pleasure of consuming the small bakery good.

The week-long event, sponsored by CSM UK, has been organised for UK craft bakeries, high street coffee shops and food retailers to celebrate and promote doughnuts to customers.

Last year’s Week raised more than £20,000, bringing the grand total raised over the last 22 years since the event started to £755,000. This year, organisers are hoping to raise in excess of £25,000.
