Scottish bakery was in 'appalling state'

Edinburgh Council health officials shut down the Pine Tree Bakery in Home Street in June after finding that mice had infested a corridor and had gnawed their way through a door frame to gain access to the bakery, the city's Sheriff Court was told.

The inspectors also came across beetle larvae and a build-up of food debris and rubbish, which posed an imminent risk of food being contaminated in the area, the court heard.

The premises, which were later re-opened after hygiene measures were carried out, were described by council environment leader Councillor Robert Aldridge as having been in an "appalling state".

A report has been sent by the council to Scotland's procurator fiscal.
