More than 500 products from nearly 100 Scottish butchers and bakers have been judged for the 17th World Scotch Pie Championships.

Held at the Carnegie Conference Centre in Dunfermline, Fife on 11 November, the judging took place over 10 categories, including best Scotch pie, best sausage roll and, for the first time, best haggis. The results will be kept a closely guarded secret until 13 January 2016.

The team of 50 expert judges, led by Ian Nelson, was joined by a special guest judge, Provost of Fife and ex-footballer Jim Leishman.

Leishman said: “I was honoured to be asked to join the panel of judges again for this iconic competition. The contest is a hard-fought one and in each category we are looking for something really special that stands out from the crowd.”

The competition is supported by industry associations Scottish Bakers and the Scottish Federation of Meat Traders and is sponsored by ingredients wholesalers Bako Northern and Scotland.
