A Scottish Isle is seeking a baker to set up business and help boost food tourism as well as the skills set in the area.

As part of a National Lottery-funded project, the North Harris Trust is offering a site on the Isle of Harris to a baker for just £2,200 a year.

The craft baker will be expected to employ at least one local person and offer them training.

A spokesperson from the North Harris Trust, said: “The local planning group wants to particularly attract a baker as there currently isn’t one in the area and it is Scotland’s year of food and drink, so there is massive support for boosting food tourism in the area.”

It is hoped the bakery would take on an apprentice and help boost the skills set in the area. The island particularly wants to build on its heritage of artisan food, with a whisky distillery and smoked salmon business just established.

The work space is sited in the island’s main settlement of Tarbert.

David Wake, who moved to the island in 2005 and has been instrumental in the project, said: “Living in Harris gives you space. You can walk the white beaches and not see a soul; you can quickly escape into the wild land with the hills and the lochs – all while having the essential services on hand. Taking the ferry over the Minch to Tarbert brings you to a simpler, safer, more relaxed way of life.”
