First Scottish Krispy Kreme store breaks records

18 February, 2013

Around 300 customers queued at Krispy Kreme's first Scottish store

Krispy Kreme UK’s first Scotland store served more than 400 customers in its first hour last week, breaking the company’s record for the first hour sales of any UK store opening.

The site, located at Hermiston Gait retail park in Edinburgh, opened last Wednesday (13 February) and attracted customers from around the country, including 300 individuals who queued to enter the doughnut retailer’s new shop before it officially opened its doors.

National newspaper The Sun reported that the long-anticipated store opening caused mile-long traffic jams on the M8 motorway, as customers picked up free Krispy Kreme-branded gifts including T-shirts, goodie bags, and limited-edition tartan scarves.

Judith Denby, chief marketing officer at Krispy Kreme UK, said: “There has been a long standing demand for a store in Scotland from our loyal Scottish fans so we’re delighted to have opened a store here and have such a great opening morning.

“There has been great anticipation for this opening and the reception we have received is overwhelming. We’re now just looking forward to welcoming more customers in for fresh doughnuts and coffee.”

Krispy Kreme UK’s Edinburgh outlet has been created as a Hotlight store, which Rob Hunt, joint managing director, told British Baker last month would enable the company to expand across the rest of the region.

He added: “We are looking at a number of outlets around Edinburgh at the moment and we are currently in negotiation with a number of landlords.”

Krispy Kreme UK came in at 27 on British Baker's BB75 list of top UK bakery retailers, based on store count.
