BIA 2013 is open for entries: 25/2/2013

The 26th annual industry awards, organised by British Baker, is looking for the best in bakery talent to enter 11 different categories. Finalists will then be invited to attend a glitzy awards ceremony with an Oriental theme, taking place on 11 September at the Park Lane Hilton in London.

Greggs and Tesco in Twitter wars: 26/2/2013

One Twitter user highlighted the power of social media this week, asking the high street bakery retailer and supermarket firm which of them produces the best yum yums? Greggs and Tesco went head-to-head in an online coversation, with this year’s top BB75 retailer giving the Twitter user named Ruairidh Tait some free yum yums and a hot chocolate from his nearest store.

Real Bread Campaign questions wholemeal claims: 27/2/2013

The campaigning group called for big brands to be put under the spotlight this week, questioning the marketing of their healthy breads and claiming their products do not contain the ingredients they are made from. As part of a new report, entitled A wholegrain of truth?, the RBC argued for clearer legislation in a bid to avoid misleading consumers.

SSP rolls out Mi Casa concept: 27/2/2013

According to British Baker's sister title M&C Report, the SSP-owned Mexican food-to-go chain is looking to expand across the UK this year, with the aim to open up in a number of locations in transportation hubs, including its first outlet based within an airport.

Greggs tops BB75 report: 28/2/2013

Ken McMeikan, chief executive of high street bakery retailer Greggs, was presented with an award at the second BB75 Lunch, which took place at the Avenue in London. Read more about the exclusive invite-only networking event, which was attended by top directors and executives from the bakery sector, in the 8 March issue of British Baker.

Finsbury sells £21m free-from business: 28/2/2013

Finsbury Food Group revealed this week that it had sold its free-from business, consisting of the Livwell and United Bakeries subsidiaries, to Genius Foods for approximately £21m. The firm has said the deal will enable it to focus on its cake and bread portfolio.
