The Wee Bakery embarks on joint venture

09 January, 2013

A new cake and coffee house is being launched next month in Halifax, West Yorkshire, British Baker can reveal.

The Wee Bakery Cake & Coffee House is due to open on Godley Lane in Stump Cross on 1 February, which will be a joint venture between the bakery business’ owner Lynn Alderman and local hair and beauty salon The Headrooms.

The self-funded business, which has been developed from registered home bakery business The Wee Bakery, will include a seating area for approximately 15 customers and will serve a range of hot and cold beverages, cakes and cupcakes to eat in or take away.

Alderman told British Baker: “The Wee Bakery is already an established home-based bakery with a great reputation and a good customer base. The next logical step was to open a premises. However, since money really is the be-all-and-end-all in life, this is what it came down to. I could never have afforded to launch the shop by myself, and it was all down to a chance conversation in a hairdressers that the dream of a shop is now becoming a reality.”

She added that customers will also have the opportunity to book celebratory cake orders in the new shop, as well as taking part in a range of cupcake classes, children’s parties and hen parties, which will be run from the premises in the future.

Alderman will be predominantly running the business alongside Lee and Dawn Walsh, owners of The Headrooms hair salon, but said she will be looking to hire at least two assistants to run the shop and employ an apprentice to assist with the bakery side of the business.

When asked whether she was planning to open further outlets under The Wee Bakery Cake & Coffee House name in the future, Alderman said: “If the business is a success, then yes, we will research the possibility of further outlets.”

Alderman, a former town planner, set up The Wee Bakery in November 2011.
