Bakers and butchers go head-to-head

07 September, 2012

Two of the industry’s well-known bakers will be battling against two butchers at this year’s Bakers’ Fair Autumn.

The second Fair of the year, taking place at the Yorkshire Event Centre in Harrogate on Sunday 7 October, will feature a live Generation Game-style Bakers versus Butchers competition, which will take place on the Bakers’ Fair Stage.

The bakers will be represented by Neil MacSymons and Peter Lonican, who will be tasked with producing a number of sausages as part of the contest, while two butchers will be faced with making and decorating a Genoese sponge.

MacSymons told British Baker: “It should be funny if the butchers have never made a Genoese before, so it should be entertaining for the crowd. It’s not too difficult to make, many housewives do it and it’s becoming more popular. Personally, I think the challenge is easier for the butchers!”

Mike Holling, chairman of the NAMB, will be compering the Bakers versus Butchers competition on stage, with the help of special guest and ex-Eastender Shaun Williamson to crown the winning team.

Martyn Leek, editor of British Baker, which organises the Bakers’ Fair events, said: “Our experienced industry representatives will have to prove their worth in front of an audience of fellow bakers, as butchers will be under the watchful eye of a wealth of skilled craftsmen and women.

“We have every bit of confidence in our bakers team, and it should prove to be an entertaining part of the whole event, which I would encourage those from the industry to register for free for.”
